FAQ - Flies & Mosquitoes
Flies and mosquitoes are common household pests that can create discomfort and health risks. These FAQs explain causes, prevention and professional treatment.
Carbon dioxide from our breath is a proven attractant. Warm bodies, dark-colored clothing, perfume and deodorant scents can also attract female mosquitoes. Mosquito bite bumps are an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva and usually last no more than 24 hours.
Mosquitoes are considered one of the deadliest creatures because they can carry and spread diseases to humans, causing a major health risk worldwide.
A mosquito feeds on an infected person and picks up the Plasmodium parasite. The parasite develops in the mosquito’s body for about two weeks. When the mosquito feeds again, the malaria parasite may be passed through saliva.
Adult mosquitoes usually live for about two weeks. Mosquitoes around the home can be reduced significantly by minimizing standing water where mosquitoes breed.
Only female mosquitoes bite people because they need blood to develop fertile eggs. Male and female mosquitoes both feed on plant nectar and fruit juices, but blood is reserved for egg production.
The life span of a fly depends on the species. Houseflies usually live around 15 to 25 days as adults. They reproduce quickly and often enter homes through open doors, windows or along with food items such as produce.
Most flies do not bite. Many flies feed using spongy mouthparts and saliva to dissolve food. Horseflies are a major biting fly and are known to bite mammals.
To reduce fly problems, prevent fly eggs from hatching and remove food sources.
- Routinely take out trash.
- Keep surfaces clean and free of leftover food or dirty dishes.
- Keep doors and windows closed or use screens.
- Use insect repellent and outdoor fly guards where needed.
Flies can carry diseases because they feed on garbage, fecal matter and rotting produce. They can contaminate food and eating surfaces when they land on them, so exposed food should be discarded if flies land on it repeatedly.
